About Coolangatta
One of the earliest settled townships of the Gold Coast, Coolangatta is still very much the heart of the southern Gold Coast Suburbs.
Coolangatta’s early industries were largely created around the asset of water, which surrounds the township: fishing, whaling and logging. Today, the reliance on that natural resource is still strong, however the tourism industry is much more sustainable.
World class waves and postcard beaches bring tourists, domestically and internationally, flocking in their own search of paradise. What is most unique about Coolangatta, and its beaches, is the actual geographical positioning. The predominant wind direction, swell direction and water current runs from south to north. Almost all the beaches face a northerly aspect, which means that the sand carried by the water current flow down the points and across the beaches. When the south swell wraps into the points and beaches – the waves break along the formed sand, with some surfable waves running for hundreds of meters. The southerly wind also blows offshore, smoothing the faces and standing up these perfect peelers.
Because of the south to north flow of water, the sand granules have also been well-crushed and washed moving up the coast. This is why Coolangatta beach sand feels more like powder than corse sand. The river systems in the area are long and still very healthy. Filtering the sea water into the crystal clear blue you see on instagram.
The draw of tourism and new residents also supports a thriving building and construction industry, which contributes to around 30% of the full-time employment in the area.
Coolangatta is the perfect blend of industry, tourism and a laid back surfer’s lifestyle. A recent flood of multi-million dollar property sales are shaping the township into an exclusive high-end home to the rich and famous. This will only be aided by its own international airport, an hour away from Brisbane (Queensland’s capital city) and an hour from Byron Bay.
Expect property prices to continue to skyrocket, as more investment is pumped into the area, continually in creasing demand. There are only around 500 houses in all of Coolanagtta and only around 3 km of beachfront, there will always be a capped supply of properties to buy.
